My New Favorite Dress

August 1, 2010

I finished the dress in time for the wedding!  It still needs some work (the gathers aren’t sewn very well), but it’s definitely wearable.  I really like this fabric that I’ve been dying to make something out of!  I’m so glad I finally got to it!  Click the picture for the full page.

Another Dress & a Question for you

July 30, 2010

I began my dress for the wardrobe contest last night.  It’s fairly similar to my burdastyle dress in the construction (but not the design), so it should come together easily.  Also, its not lined which will help quite a bit.  I’m hoping to finish before a wedding on Saturday evening (quick work!).  I’m using burda 3/09 #121, the “Exclusive Design” from the issue.  It’s so gorgeous in the mag, but my version will look very different because of the fabric (a printed linen blend).  Much more fun than formal, more like a sundress.  I’m excited about it.  I’m also using the pleated waistband from burda 9/08 #132.

The other thing I’m working on is renaming my blog.  The best one I’ve come up with so far is “Versatility”.  The concept being that I enjoy making pieces that can be worn for many occasions, dressed up or down, etc.  This is one of my goals when sewing garments for myself (because I want to get some use out of them!).  The name could also be parlayed into the name of a line down the road (if I ever get there).  The one thing that could be very confusing is that my style in general might not necessarily be considered incredibly versatile (as far as the types of pieces I make).  I’m still thinking about it, but do you have an opinion?  Do I need a name that’s more descriptive of my style rather than my “goal”?  How do other people name their blogs, lines, etc?

All Finished

July 28, 2010

I’m going mobile!  I just got a droid about a month ago, and downloaded the wordpress app.  I have a feeling I will be posting a lot more often now…

I had to take yesterday morning off, but I finished the dress!  What a relief to have that project out of the way…  Now onto my wardrobe, and fast!

Now without giving anything away, a quick review.  The pattern is fantastic, the fit is great, true to burda patterns.  My particular changes modified the bodice and I think made the top a bit large on me.  This dress took me so long!  I believe it was about 25 hours of work (not including the muslin).  Since I gave it a full lining, I think it basically doubled my sewing time.  I tried, and mostly succeeded in creating a really nice finish that I was very happy with.  There was a fair amount of handstitching at the end, which I normally despise, but I took my time and made it look nice.  I’m very happy with the resulting dress.  Even though its a bit simpler than I originally imagined (mainly because I wanted a print fabric), it is very much “me” which is what they wanted from us.  Its also incredibly versatile, which of course I always love 🙂

Here is your teaser, and this is all I can share until the book is out.

Dress progress

July 24, 2010

Another in a summer of 90+ degrees days in Cincinnati!  Perfect for staying inside (in the house whose insulation leaves something to be desired) and sewing my book dress.  Oh boy.  I really put this one off.  Working hard today, and hopefully I can finish tomorrow and ship it off Monday!  So far, I’m almost finished with the bodice…  I still haven’t made a couple of my final design decisions (I’m bad with decision-making), so those will be last minute as always.  Trying to have made lots of progress so that we can have date night tonight!  Hmmm… we’ll see.  But, I’m excited to see Inception (at least I think I am, I can barely tell what’s going on in the previews).

Oh yes, and the fabric got much better after washing.  I can definitely tell that it’s linen.  Even after pressing really well, it’s crazy wrinkly, but that gives it some character (which was sorely lacking before the wash).  It’s incredibly lightweight and I’m almost worried because I bought a broadcloth for the lining which seems a bit too heavy now.  Oh well, it will have to do!

I got an awesome haircut today.  I think it’s my favorite ever!  So I’m really excited and happy that I did so before date night 🙂  I departed from my Great Clips ways (I know, I know, but it’s $10!), and spent the extra money, and let me tell you, I may never go back…  Actually, my best friend has her cosmetology license, I just hate to ask her to do my hair, but I think she hates that I go to Great Clips too!  Here’s a shot with my pup.

Muslins and more

July 21, 2010

Well, I got my fabric last week and I’m pretty disappointed.  My fault I guess for being so excited about it ;-P  On the other hand this is nothing like what I asked for.  Anyway, here it is. I hear we’re allowed to post it.  it’s just a simple cotton in a very plain color.  I’m going to try to add some interest somehow I think, but I haven’t decided how yet.  They also sent 2 spools of thread, but no lining or zipper, etc.

I just finished my muslin, so the cutting will commence tomorrow.  I so wish I could share it!I bought my lining fabric & zipper tonight!

The other thing I’m working on is my first skirt for the wardrobe contest.  I’m not sure I’m going to finish this time!  I’m really going to try, but I think I still have a gift on my list to make this month, too.  And a baby shower to plan.  Nothing else major unless my work decides to keep me late too much.

Here is the skirt front:

My Other News

June 30, 2010

The project that I couldn’t discuss before has been announced (finally!).  So, here it is: I’m going to be part of the first BurdaStyle Book!

The idea, as they explain, is that they introduce 5 new patterns, and show how to make a couple variations of each pattern.  Then they show some other people’s variations of each pattern for inspiration.  I think it’s absolutely brilliant, and of course true to the BS mission.  I get to be one of the “inspiration” contributors!

So, what does this entail exactly?  Well, they sent each of us (the contributors) a line drawing of two different patterns.  For me, they sent me the dress and the skirt from the book.  We were supposed to sketch 2 different ideas for each pattern, and take a picture of a fabric we would like to make it in.  They took all of our design ideas and decided on one per contributor.  I get to do a dress variation (my favorite of course)!   Those lucky people at BS got to do all the fabric shopping for every design (how jealous am I?).  I just now received the actual pattern, and the fabric they’ve chosen is on its way.  I still don’t know what fabric they picked for me, and I think that’s the part I’ve been anticipating the most!  At the end of July I’ll be sending the finished product in for professional pictures that I absolutely can not wait to see!

If I could, I would share with you all of my ideas, but I don’t believe I’m allowed to do that 😦  I of course can’t share the original designs or my final design, since those will be in the book (and what’s exciting news without some anticipation?  Am I right?  I’m hoping I’ll be able to take a picture of the fabric when it arrives at least!

The book comes out in Fall 2011.  Maybe I’ll make up one of my other design ideas in the meantime… if that’s not against the rules 🙂

Can you tell how excited I am?

Happy Fourth!

June 19, 2010

I just put way too much time into fixing my blog 🙂  I should be sewing today…  I have lots to do.  Anyway, I think this is it!  I really like it now.  The only other thing I’m working on is the name.  I’m beginning to despise my name.  I want something a little more sophisticated and not so cutesy.  I’m terrible with names, too, so this could take me a while.  Any suggestions out there?  What do you think of the new look?

I planned to finish my first skirt today, but in reality I’ve barely started.  It’s an easy one, though.  I’m also making a gift that I need for tomorrow.  So, that will be the first thing I do.  Here is my fabric:
